The first ever WPTDeepStacks Hanoi is officially in the books! The ten day series took place from April 16 to 25 at the Crown Poker Club. Given the challenges brought on by the global health crisis, it drew a substantial 1,410 entries across thirteen events and amassed an overall grand prize pool of VNđ 17,866,042,000 (~US$ 774,960). On the final day, Nguyễn Văn Phinh stunned the crowd by winning the coveted Main Event and Player of the Series titles. Also taking down events were Nguyễn Năng Quang, Nguyễn Mạnh Hưng, and Hoàng Anh Tuẩn. We’ve got those final results for you.

Main Event: NGUYỄN VAN PHINH – VNđ 842,000,000 (~US$ 36,522)

The centerpiece of the series was the VNđ 4 billion guaranteed Main Event with 378 entries across four starting days. At a buy in of VNđ 22,000,000 (~US$ 954), the prize pool ballooned to a cumbersome VNđ 7,333,200,000 (~US$ 318,086) with 48 players earning a share. Nguyễn Văn Phinh shipped it to claim the first ever WPTDS Hanoi Main Event title and a cool VNđ 842,000,000 (~US$ 36,522). This was Nguyễn’s maiden live tournament victory and largest career cash. He joined Dhaval Mudgal, Vincent Chauve, and Hamish Crawshaw as one of the celebrated WPTDS Vietnam champions.

After his win, the champion carried the momentum over to the Megastack Finale where he proceeded to cash out in 3rd place for another VNđ 50,000,000 (~US$ 2,169) straight in the wallet. With these two deep runs, Nguyễn Văn Phinh won Player of the Series.

The final table kicked off with Lý Đắc Dũng in the driver’s seat. Within the first half hour, Hồ Duy Manh eliminated Nguyễn Ngọc Đại in 9th place, followed shortly after by Trẫn Keni who fell to Nguyen Trung Ha. Lê Huy Thành busted next which led to a lengthy six handed match. It ended when Phạm Huy Hoàng shoved holding pocket Sevens that couldn’t get past Lý Đắc Dũng’s pocket Aces. Hồ then denied Le Hai Nam in 5th place with pocket Fours set on the river against K-10 top pair. As mentioned in our previous recap, Nam entered Day 2 with only 8 big blinds which he turned into a final table seat. Down to four players, an ICM deal was reached. Here was the breakdown:

The race for the Player of the Series title came down to the last day. All eyes were on frontrunner Phạm Ngọc Quốc Bảo who was guaranteed to pump in more points having reached the final six of the Crown Poker Club SuperStack Classic event. Another player closely watched was fourth ranked Hồ Duy Manh who was one of the Main Event finalists. However, in the end, both players took a back seat to Nguyễn Ván Phinh who came from having accrued no points to seizing the distinguished title.

Nguyễn won the Main Event and finished 3rd at the MegaStack Finale. For his incredible achievement, he was awarded the POS Trophy and a US$ 1,500 WPT Passport. For 2nd placer Phạm, he received a VNđ 5,000,000 Crown Poker Club Coupon, and for 3rd placer Hồ, he received a VNđ 3,000,000 Crown Poker Club Coupon.

The Crown Poker Club SuperStack Classic Freezeout was a two day affair. 65 players signed up at VNđ 6,000,000 (~US$ 260) each for a prize pool of VNđ 340,470,000 (~US$ 14,770). Day 1 ended with three players dipping their hand in the money jar and six players returning for Day 2. At the helm was Nguyễn Mạnh Hưng, ranked second was Latvia’s Aigars Plivcs. Both players went on to meet at heads up then agreed on an even split for VNđ 93,580,000 (~US$ 4,059) each. Nguyễn Mạnh Hưng was awarded the win and the trophy. Warm Up Event winner Phạm Ngọc Quốc Bảo finished in 3rd place.

The two day High Roller event was one of the most sought after side events with the biggest names in the Vietnam poker scene coming out in full force. Day 1 attracted 61 entries (53 uniques, 8 re-entries). On Day 2, registration was open for another ninety minutes, bringing in 24 more to the mix for a total of 85 entries (64 uniques, 21 re-entries). With each entry ponying up VNđ 33,000,000 (~US$ 1,431), the prize pool grew nearly 2.5 times the VNđ 1BN guarantee for a much richer VNđ 2,473,500,000 (~US$ 107,291) prize pool. Interestingly, this was exactly the same prize money as the Super High Roller event that drew 51 entries. Claiming the lion’s share VNđ 798,000,000 (~US$ 34,614) was Vietnamese pro Nguyễn Năng Quang after defeating Trẫn Hùng Mạnh aka Macaron Tran at heads up. This was Quang’s first WPT victory and sixth in his career. Based on his THM stats, this win pushed him over US$ 390K in total live earnings.

Recapping the race, 36 players advanced to Day 2 with Nguyễn Văn Chiến as chip leader. Chiến went on to miss the final table by one spot, falling in 10th place for VNđ 74,000,000 (~US$ 3,209). Just before his fall, two players busted simultaneously on the bubble – Andre Lettau and Nguyễn Đức Thành – and with both players seated at separate tables, they split the 11th place cash for VNđ 34,500,00 each. The final table was nothing short of star studded with Nguyễn Năng Quang and Trẫn Hùng Mạnh “Macaron” joined by Super High Roller champion and runner up Đặng Văn Hiển and Nguyễn Đức Minh, decorated player Cao Ngọc Anh, William Kang, and Nguyễn Hoàng Bách. Main Event winner Nguyễn Ván Phinh joined the action where he proceeded to finish in 3rd place. At heads up, chip leader Hoàng Anh Tuẩn and Nguyễn Thùy Dưong struck a deal with Tuẩn declared the winner.
