WPT Prime Cambodia: Ashish Munot wins SuperStack, leads Player of the Festival race

Indian pro Ashish Munot is having a spectacular 2022 season. It has only been five months since he returned to the live scene and already has picked up his eighth cash. At WPT Prime Cambodia, Munot closed out the NagaWorld SuperStack 50K for his second side event title this year. Just ten days prior, he won the the APPT Manila ₱ 100K buy in No Limit Hold’em 6-Handed. The latest win awarded him his career fourth live event trophy and padded up his total live earnings an extra US$ 12,877.

A highly recognized and admired poker player from India, Munot’s major breakthrough arrived in 2019 when he won the WPT India Main Event for his biggest takedown and payout of ~US$ 89,570. After borders re-opened, he hit the ground running in pursuit of a second WPT major title. In May this year, Munot nearly achieved it. He came from behind at the inaugural WPT Prime Main Event in Hanoi, Vietnam, falling just one spot short to fellow countryman Zarvan Tumboli. Despite the loss, it did award him another large payout of ~US$ 87,230.

After a two month wait, Munot is back on WPT turf once again and will get another chance at the coveted title. He is in prime form having taken down the NagaWorld SuperStack 50k.

Event recap

The two-day NagaWorld SuperStack 50k was a hot item on the opening day menu. It drew an impressive crowd of 183 entries for a prize pool of US$ 49,703. At Day 1, Munot was sweating it on the bubble round when a big stack pushed on a board . After tanking, Munot risked it and doubled up with a higher two pair over . He closed the day ranked fourth in chips while fellow Indian player Akshay Kapoor led the pack. On a side note, according to fellow pro Kunal Patni, instead of Munot resting up for the next day, he played an online High Rollers event and finished 5th. Clearly rest wasn’t wasn’t an issue because onDay 2, Munot took charge. He denied several players and entered the final table with a commanding advantage.

Further displaying his prowess, Munot proceeded to eliminate Eric Wasylenko (8th) with rivering the ace to dust . He then cleaned out short stacked Tatsuhiko Terai (7th). After Kapoor crushed Anmol Mehta with a royal flush, Munot sent him packing in 4th place. At three-handed, Trent Fechter patiently waited for his time to shine. The moment arrived on a double up through Munot with trips Queens over mid-pair. Fechter went on to eliminate Sam Adams in 3rd place to face Munot for the title.

In the final showdown, it only took three hands to end the fight. Munot check-jammed on a board , Fechter risked it with , Munot had for top pair. The river sealed the victory. Munot became the proud owner of the first ever WPT Prime Cambodia trophy.

With the completion of the first event, the WPT Player of the Festival race is on. The top 9 players of the NagaWorld SuperStack each earned points. Munot leads the chase with 300 points. At the end of the festival, the player with the most points accrued will win a WPT Passport worth US$ 5,000 to any Main Tour of choice this year.
