Big turnout at the first ever Vietnam Series of Poker Championship in Ha Noi
International live events may still be a long time coming but that doesn’t mean homegrown live events suffer the same fate. In some countries, restrictions have already eased up allowing for live tournaments to resume.
In Vietnam, players craving for live poker got exactly that this past week with the Vietnam Series of Poker (VSOP) hosting its first championship event at the Loyal Poker Club in Ha Noi. The seven day festival ran from June 29 to July 5. Ten events filled the schedule along with LP 4,000,000,000 (~US$ 172,000) in guaranteed prizes. In the aftermath, all the guaranteed events were smashed and its successful turnout may be an inspiration for more local live events to come. We’ve got all the highlights below.
Main Event: Nguyen Van Chung – LP 645,000,000 (~US$ 27,800)
For its first ever solo series, the VSOP Championship pulled in a solid 390 runners to its star attraction, the Main Event – LP 2 billion guaranteed. With each entry at LP 8,800,000 (~US$ 380), it more than breached the guarantee for a final pot amounting to LP 3,120,000,000 (~US$ 135,000). Outlasting the competition was Nguyen Van Chung who defeated Nguyen Dinh Anh Cuong at heads up to claim the first ever VSOP Championship Main Event title and the LP 645,000,000 (~US$ 27,800) first prize. Additionally, this was Chung’s first ever live win and largest live tournament career payout.
