Ari Engel Wins WPT Cambodia Championship Event for $91,444 After Heads-Up Deal

Ari Engel - WPT Cambodia Championship Event Champion

After five long days of action, the WPT Cambodia Championship Event has found its champion.

After a heads-up deal and a flip for the trophy, Ari Engel emerged on top against Aditya Agarwal, turning his first visit to NagaWorld into a tournament to remember.

Out of 391 entries, only nine players returned for the final day, and it took just around six hours to crown the champion.

Engel came into Day 2 with just 18 big blinds, having played only Day 1A. He never considered firing another flight after bagging his stack, believing the chips he had already secured were too valuable to risk.

“Math-wise, re-entering after you bag your stack is almost never a good idea. I had 18 blinds, but more than two times the starting stack. That’s worth quite a bit of money to throw away if you have a stack.”

It turned out to be the right decision.

From a $1,300 buy-in, Engel turned his one bullet into $91,444, a $10,400 WPT World Championship seat to Las Vegas, and the biggest trophy of the series.

Nine Players, Nine Flags

The final table featured nine players representing nine different countries, once again showing the international appeal of the WPT Cambodia festival at NagaWorld.

Micheal O’Neill entered the final table as the massive chip leader and immediately put his stack to work, raising almost every pot and keeping the pressure on the table.

Bekzhan Rasulov was the first to go in ninth place after losing a flip to Rindra Norodom. O’Neill continued his aggressive run, eliminating Aleksei Zhukov in eighth place.

Benhur Ybarsabal followed in seventh after Agarwal flopped a set against his top pair. Ybarsabal improved to trips on the turn but failed to find another card on the river.

Then came one of the biggest coolers of the final table.

Agarwal held aces, Mangalam Seksaria had kings, and O’Neill had queens, putting the top three premium pairs into the same pot. Agarwal's aces held to win the massive pot and eliminate Seksaria in sixth place.

Engel Finds His Lifeline

Engel wasn't making much of a move at the beginning of the final table and slowly lost chips, eventually finding himself dangerously short.

But just when he needed it most, Engel found a crucial double against O’Neill.

Holding pocket queens against O’Neill's ace-ten, Engel was in serious trouble after O’Neill paired his ace on the flop. Engel had just two outs, but one arrived on the river to keep him alive.

Looking back at the moment, Engel said he tries not to let the pressure of a big all-in change his perspective.

“I always say to myself when I’m all-in in deep spots like that, it’s all good no matter what. I’m blessed to have a great life, and if I lose, it’s going to be okay. I’m trying to win, so it’s great to get lucky.”

That river turned out to be a major turning point.

Hendrik Uibo - 4th Place

O’Neill continued raising and applying pressure, but eventually Rindra Norodom moved all-in with ace-ten against O’Neill's pocket jacks. Norodom flopped top pair, but O’Neill hit a set on the turn and eliminated him in fifth place.

Hendrik Uibo then produced one of the best survival runs of the final table, first tripling up and later doubling again. But his comeback finally ended when Engel eliminated him in fourth place.

The Fall of O’Neill

Three-handed play began with the stacks relatively close, but Engel started picking up pot after pot and eventually took over the chip lead.

Then came the biggest hand of the three-handed battle.

O’Neill and Engel played a massive pot that reached the river, where Engel moved all-in. O’Neill eventually called with top pair, only to discover Engel had the same pair with a much better kicker.

Engel won the huge pot and eliminated O’Neill in third place.

It was a tough ending for O’Neill, who had been the dominant force for much of the final table. He constantly raised, put his opponents under pressure, and even came within one card of eliminating Engel earlier in the day.

But Engel found that river out.

And later, Engel was the one who delivered the knockout.

O’Neill had already finished runner-up in the WPT Cambodia Championship last January for the biggest cash of his career. This time, he made another deep run but had to settle for third place.

Heads-up started with Engel holding a massive 14 million against Agarwal's 1.6 million.

But Agarwal refused to go quietly.

He fought his way back to around 5.8 million, significantly closing the gap and making the heads-up battle much more interesting.

At that point, Engel asked if they could check the numbers, and Agarwal agreed.

After looking at the ICM figures, they agreed to a deal that locked up $91,444 for Engel and $81,610 for Agarwal.

They also agreed to split the $10,400 WPT World Championship seat, with Engel taking the seat and paying Agarwal his share.

With the money settled, there was just one thing left to decide - the trophy.

The two players agreed to flip for the title.

First Time at NagaWorld, First Trophy

For Engel, it was the perfect ending to his first appearance at NagaWorld.

He arrived with just 18 big blinds, stayed patient, survived a two-outer, battled through an international final table, knocked out O’Neill in third, and eventually found himself holding the trophy.

Beyond the result, Engel also had plenty of praise for the festival and the team behind it.

“Danny and his team did a great job, and it was very, very well run. I do like it, and I would love to come back for the January series.”

From one starting flight and a single $1,300 bullet to $91,444, a WPT World Championship seat, and a WPT Cambodia Championship trophy, Engel's first trip to NagaWorld couldn't have gone much better.

After Aditya Agarwal fought his way back into the heads-up battle, Ari Engel asked if they could take a look at the numbers. Agarwal agreed, and the two players paused the action to discuss a deal.

After checking the ICM numbers, Engel was set to receive $91,444, while Agarwal would take $81,610. They also agreed to split the $10,400 WPT World Championship seat, with Engel taking the seat and paying Agarwal his share.

With the deal settled, there was just one thing left to decide - the trophy.

The two players agreed to flip for the title, and Engel came out on top!

And just like that, Ari Engel is the WPT Cambodia Championship Event champion!

Micheal O’Neill opened to 200,000 before Ari Engel three-bet to 700,000. O’Neill called, and the two went heads-up to the K♥ 6♣ 5♥ flop.

Engel fired 750,000, and O’Neill called. Engel kept the pressure on with another 1,100,000 on the Q♠ turn, and once again O’Neill called.

The 6♥ river paired the board, and Engel pushed forward two stacks of 100,000 chips, putting O’Neill all-in for his remaining around 2,700,000.

O’Neill used one time bank before eventually making the call.

Both players had top pair, but Engel had the better kicker with ace-king. His hand held, giving him the massive pot and eliminating O’Neill in 3rd place.

It was a remarkable turnaround.

O’Neill had been the massive chip leader for much of the final table, constantly raising and putting everyone under pressure. He even came within one card of eliminating Engel earlier, only for Engel to find one of his two outs on the river to double up.

Now, Engel was the one delivering the knockout.

For O’Neill, it is another near miss at NagaWorld. He finished runner-up in the WPT Cambodia Championship last January for the biggest cash of his career, and this time he gets even closer with a 3rd-place finish.

The title slipped away again, but O’Neill leaves with another major score.

Hendrik Uibo used two time banks to make his decision before eventually calling.

O’Neill turned over T♠ 9♦ for a straight, and that was good enough to take down another huge pot. Uibo mucked his hand and was left with fewer than 10 big blinds.

O’Neill continues to pile on the pressure, while Uibo is now fighting for his tournament life with a very short stack.

One of the rarest hands of the tournament just unfolded at the Championship Event final table.

Aditya Agarwal opened to 105,000 before button Micheal O’Neill three-bet to 315,000. From the big blind, Mangalam Seksaria then announced all-in for 1,375,000.

Back on Agarwal, he made the call. O’Neill wasn't going anywhere either, announcing a five-bet all-in. Agarwal snap-called for his remaining 2,555,000, setting up a massive three-way all-in.

It was an absolute cooler, with the three biggest pocket pairs in the deck all colliding in one massive pot.

The result was brutal for Mangalam, who was eliminated in 6th place, while Agarwal not only secured the double but jumped into the chip lead.

Micheal O’Neill opened the action once again from under the gun before Benhur Ybarsabal moved all-in for 160,000. Big blind Aditya Agarwal made the call, and O’Neill came along as well.

The A♥ 7♥ 4♠ flop brought more action. O’Neill continued for 160,000, but Agarwal answered with a check-raise to 500,000, which was enough to force O’Neill out of the pot.

Ybarsabal was nearly drawing dead against Agarwal’s flopped set. The A♦ turn gave him a little hope, but the 6♠ river brought no rescue.

Non-stop aggression from Micheal O’Neill as he opened to 100,000 from the cutoff, with Aleksei Zhukov defending his big blind.

O’Neill continued for another 100,000 on the A♥ K♠ 9♦ flop, and Zhukov check-called.

Both players checked the 2♦ turn before Zhukov checked once again on the Q♦ river.

O’Neill then put Zhukov all-in, applying maximum pressure. After some time in the tank, Zhukov made the call.

“How Much Would You Pay Me?”

Micheal O’Neill continued his aggressive run, opening to 125,000 from the button. Once again, Mangalam Seksaria came back with a three-bet to double it from the big blind.

O’Neill made the call and even laughed when Seksaria gave his cards a blind check before the Q♠ J♣ 7♥ flop arrived.

O’Neill checked it back, and Seksaria led for 250,000 on the 8♦ turn. O’Neill called to see the 9♦ river.

Seksaria slowed down and checked.

O’Neill looked across the table and asked, “How much would you pay me?”

Seksaria gave him no answer, and O’Neill eventually fired a hefty 600,000.

Seksaria made the call, but the news wasn't good.

O’Neill turned over T♣ 8♠ for a straight, and that was more than enough to take the pot. Seksaria quickly mucked his hand as O’Neill added another massive pot to his stack.

Rindra Norodom opened to 85,000 from under the gun and found two callers before big blind Bekzhan Rasulov moved all-in for 470,000.

Back on Norodom, he reshoved for 1,365,000, forcing both callers out of the pot and setting up a heads-up showdown.

Micheal O’Neill had been raising almost every hand, and he was at it again, opening to 90,000 from the hijack before Benhur Ybarsabal called.

O’Neill fired another 175,000 on the 9♣ 8♥ 3♥ flop, but Ybarsabal stayed with him.

The 7♦ turn brought another big decision as O’Neill pulled the trigger and put Ybarsabal all-in. After using two time banks, Ybarsabal eventually let it go, giving O’Neill another pot without showdown.

Then, on the very next hand, the action flipped completely.

Bekzhan Rasulov, the shortest stack at the final table, moved all-in for his remaining 255,000. O’Neill looked him up with a snap call.

The champion will walk away with $105,765, along with a $10,400 seat to the WPT World Championship in Las Vegas this December.
