Big day for the heavyweights of poker at World Poker Tour (WPT) Vietnam as two high roller events stole the spotlight at Crown Poker Club. Among the attendees were Sparrow Cheung, Chu Thai Thinh, Justin Chu, Dao Minh Phu, and making his debut appearance in Vietnam was WPT Prime Championship victor Stephen Song.

Throughout the day, new champions were crowned India’s Sriharsha Doddapaneni, Sameer Agarwal, Vietnam’s Nguyen Quang Huy, Nguyen Tien Thanh, and Filipino Marc Rivera.

The Survivor Bounty 8 Max was also on the floor. This was the second event where a WPT Prime Championship Package was up for grabs. The first on was already claimed by Opener champion Anthony Cierco. Day 1A closed with a familiar face at the top of the counts, France’s Yannick Leonard who continued to impress with his consistent deep runs.

Event 11: Survivor Bounty 8 Max – Day 1A results

The Survivor Bounty 8 Max was a unique offering in the WPT lineup with each bounty equating to two buy ins (₫30M) and only in play once the field was down to 20%. As per usual, bagging time was at 12.5%.

The first entry day attracted 121 curious enthusiasts. By 25 players, bounties were in play. Yan Fen Wang earned the first bounty by knocking out Alvin Jeff Sembrano with KsQd outdrawing AhKh on a board Qs8s7cQc5h.

To wrap up the heat, short stacked Do Quang Thang (3 bb) could not overcome the four-way, shoving with Qc7c and eventually falling to Yannick Leonard‘s As6s straight on a board 8c5s3h7h4s.

The 16 remaining players have a night’s rest before returning to the felt on October 11, 2023. Up next are the final two flights, both taking place on October 10, 2023.

Sriharsha Doddapaneni wins Megastack High Roller

The two-day Megastack High Roller resumed with the final 8 players out of 52 runners back at the scene and guaranteed a piece of the ₫2,522,000,000 (~US$ 103,420) prize pool. After four hours of play, India’s Sriharsha Doddapaneni outdueled Chen Peng at heads up to win the ₫824,500,000 (~$33,810) top prize and his first ever live title.

You can watch the livestream via the CPC YouTube channel.

Leading up to the victory, Doddapaneni entered the final table as second big stack then lost a sizable chunk on a failed bluff against Peng. It wasn’t until four-handed did Doddapaneni win a big flip against Zheng Tian Hao with AhKh flush over 4d4s to take the lead. He went on to eliminate Zheng (4th) and Le Nhu An (3rd) to enter heads up with a massive 120 bb to Peng’s 30 bb.

Despite the lead, it was no easy finish. Peng doubled up on a cooler with Jc7s full house dominating Doddapaneni’s 8c6c straight on a board Jd5c7d{7h4s. Peng won another pot to take the lead then dropped after being outkicked on the next all in showdown. Back up, Doddapaneni was ahead 100 bb to Peng’s 20 bb and still could not seal the win. Peng chipped away at the big stack and regained the lead without an all in.

It took another half an hour for a big pot to swing to Doddapaneni’s side with Ad6c full house push on the river board Ac9s6d3sAh called by Peng with KsKc. This time, Doddapaneni went on to win it. With his massive advantage, Doddapaneni won it with 10h2h flush over trips Jd3s trips on a board 3cAh3hKcQh with bets on every street.

Nguyen Quang Huy wins the Billionaire Club High Stakes Challenge

Despite being among the late registrants, multi-decorated local pro Nguyen Quang Huy needed only one bullet to take down the Billionaire Club High Stakes Challenge and pocket the 1,571,500,000 (~$65,000) top prize.

Huy, who goes by the pseudonym “Mr. Huy Dzai” bested a field of 18 talented high-rollers that included the likes of reigning WPT Prime Championship winner Stephen Song, Filipino John Tech, and legendary Vietnam high roller Dao Minh Phu

Heading into the final table, Huy already enjoyed the chip advantage at 1,314,000 while Taiwanese pro Justin Chu was in hot pursuit. With only four places paid, Huy proceeded to steamroll the opposition and dealt the knockout blow against fellow countryman Chu Thai Thinh to burst the bubble.

First to the money was Song who fell on a cooler to Nguyen Van Sang with KsKd dominating QdQs. Song commented,

“The pace of play is so quick, even compared to America where it’s fast. The players are tough. They’re definitely not ‘folders’. It would take some getting used to. I’m happy I cashed and I’m looking forward to playing in the upcoming events.”

Justin Chu followed suit with his QhJc shove missing the mark against Huy’s Ac2h. This signaled in the heads up round with Huy ahead in chips against Sang. By the 20th hand, Huy had grinded down Sang to 3 bb and knocked him with 10c{10h set over King-Five offsuit.

“It’s been a long time since I won a WPT trophy. I’m happy that I finally got a trophy. I want to also get the trophy in the Main Event so that I could get that passport to play in the WPT World Championship.”
