Global Poker Awards 2020: Paul Phua and Robert Campbell among the winners
The second annual Global Poker Awards took place in Las Vegas on Friday, with many well-known pros being given awards. The categories were an interesting mix, and included Players Choice for Toughest Opponent, Tournament Director of the Year, Journalist of the Year and Broadcaster of the year, along with Poker ICON. Here are a few of the winners from the awards ceremony.
Two winners hail from Asia-Pacific: Paul Phua and Robert Campbell
Paul Phua – Industry person of the year
Few could argue against Paul Phua picking up an award, with the work he has done with the Triton Poker alone being more than enough for recognition. The series has had a big year in terms of growing the Triton brand, organising tournaments in different parts of the world and delivering astonishing prize pools.
The crowning event of the season was, for many viewers, Triton London. Staged in August, the series saw record-breaking prize pools and a change at the top of the all-time money list, not to mention raising $2.7 million for charity. Few, if any people can claim to balance being a world-class poker player with being a world-leading force within the poker industry.
Robert Campbell – GPI Breakout Player of the Year
Australian pro Robert Campbell has really made is mark on the poker world in 2019, not least due to his dramatic clinching of the WSOP Player of the Year title. The race went down to the wire before a points correction saw Campbell awarded as the winner. It was an accolade well-deserved from a man who had claimed his first two WSOP bracelets during the summer before rising from the relative obscurity of 6,300th place on the GPI rankings to 410th within the last 12 months.
