2024 Poker Traffic Insights: GGPoker Shapes the Landscape, WPT Global a Strong Contender

Even though their traffic decreased over the year, the occupied cash game seats on GGPoker rarely dropped below 10,000, and they have gained more than 1,000 players in the end of September and the beginning of October.

Seasonal Success: A Remarkable Feat

What makes GGPoker’s recent achievements particularly notable is the timing. The months of July and August are typically considered a low point in the online poker calendar. Historically, most poker platforms experience a lull in traffic during these summer months, but GGPoker defied this trend by consistently achieving over 9000 concurrent cash game players in 2023. This level of engagement has not been seen since January 2019, when PokerStars held a comparable traffic level.

Apart from a temporary surge in mid-2020, spurred by the global COVID-19 pandemic, no other online poker platform has managed to sustain such high levels of cash game traffic for over four years. This speaks to GGPoker’s resilience, market strategy, and ability to captivate players even during traditionally slow periods.

Five years ago, GGPoker was relatively unknown, averaging around 1250 concurrent players. Fast forward to today, the platform has expanded its player base significantly, from approximately 3000 players three years ago to 6650 last year. This year, GGPoker’s share of the market reached an astonishing 51%, up from just 10% a few years prior. This exponential growth shows no signs of slowing down, solidifying GGPoker’s position as the dominant force in the online poker world.

WPT Global’s Emergence as a Contender

One of the most striking shifts in the market this year occurred in March , when WPT Global managed to attract five times more cash game players than it had previously. This increase saw their player base grow from around 500 to approximately 2,500.

The growth of WPT Global was partly due to targeted marketing campaigns, exclusive tournaments, and collaborations with poker influencers, which effectively drew players from other platforms.

By May 2024, WPT Global had surpassed the still declining PokerStars in terms of active cash game players, solidifying its position as a strong contender in the competitive online poker market.

PokerStars vs. WPT Global

Despite its decline, PokerStars managed to regain its lead over WPT Global during two brief periods in the summer, taking advantage of special promotions and summer-themed tournaments to attract players back to its platform.

However, these gains were short-lived. By the end of July, WPT Global regained its edge, consistently maintaining a player base that is around 250-400 larger than that of PokerStars. This shift marked a turning point in the competitive dynamics between the two platforms.
