World Series of Poker (WSOP) 2020- Official Schedule (Final Version) [POSTPONED]

Over the past couple of months the WSOP has done well in keeping the conversation going about the world’s most anticipated poker series of the year. With the 51st series in 2020 we are entering the second half of a century of WSOP history and once again thousands of players are expected to rain down from all over the world on the RIO All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas this summer.

Each year the organizers are expected to create something bigger, something better, something unexpected or innovative. And this year the WSOP team kept announcing updates on the schedule on a regular basis that created buzz and lively conversations in the poker community.

Some of the updates announced innovations, others even some more back-to-the-roots approaches and of course not all announcements were received positively by the community.

101 Bracelet Events

All in all the 2020 WSOP schedule is made up of 101 bracelet events, of which 87 are live tournaments and 14 are being conducted online. All tournaments will take place between 26th May and 15th July.

Most of the announcements over the past few months were around added tournaments, special formats, structure changes etc.. Most notable was the decision to make many of the events freezeouts with no re-entries whatsoever. This was greeted with delight by the poker community as it restores a more pure feeling to the prestigious bracelet events.

The $1,500 “Mystery Bounty” tourney with its randomly assigned bounty prizes up to $250,000 raised some eyebrows but most poker fans seem curious about how this will turn out and many recreational players might make it their “one shot” at a WSOP event this year. The online events are still being considered as less valuable as the live events, but these give players a chance that cannot make it out to the Rio or to Nevada altogether as players in New Jersey will be eligible to participate from the other side of the nation.

And of course the most important of it all, the $10,000 Main Event, will take place from 1st to 15th July and stay just as it is.

Organisational Improvements

How the change from re-entries to freezeout will affect participation numbers in the events is difficult to predict. One thing is clear, however, and that is the fact that many players will attend, especially for the specialty events like the $400 Colossus, the $888 Crazy Eights, the $1,500 Mystery Bounty or the $1,111 Little One For One Drop. These events have completely blown the registration process apart in the past and the WSOP now announced in their latest press release that there are some significant improvements to the registration and payout process.

The press release reads, “[…] while the event schedule is now finalized, several notable enhancements are coming to the 2020 WSOP which will be detailed in the coming months. The first area of improvement involves the registration process.”

The main change will be a separation of the registration and payout rooms to avoid congestion. Players that are used to the old locations should make sure to reorient themselves where to go to buy-in to events or cash out their winnings.

The WSOP encourages players to register for WSOP Tournament accounts online and also promises to make heavier use of the registration kiosks that were introduced last year and that were featured regularly on Daniel Negreanu’s video blogs while grinding many events over the last summer.

“The WSOP Tournament Account is a no-brainer for anyone who plays more than a couple WSOP events annually,” said Negreanu.  “Literally I went to the registration cage once to set it up, then utilized the self-serve kiosks the rest of the summer to register for any event I wanted to play. I was in and out of the kiosk in less than a minute and on my way to my seat.”

Now that the schedule is complete, everyone can make their travel arrangements to Las Vegas this summer. And as the WSOP announced more updates on further enhancements around the event, we are sure to read more press releases over the next couple of weeks to keep our interest piqued.
