Poker in Vietnam set a huge milestone this past weekend with the Pro Poker Club concluding its first major event, the Pro Poker Cup. For those just getting around to the news, the Pro Poker Club is the newest poker club to open in Vietnam and is the first legal poker club in Ho Chi Minh City. Unlike other venues in the country, the Pro Poker Club is open to both locals and foreigners alike.

Just one week after opening its doors, the Pro Poker Cup took place, held from July 27th – July 30th. The event featured a VND 200M (US$8,800) Guaranteed Main Event with a buy-in set at VND 5M (US$220) and a VND 10M (US$440) buy-in High Rollers event held on the final day.

Here are the results as they unfolded.

The Main Event attracted a total of 154 entries over the course of three starting days. While the first two days drew in 39 sign ups each, the Saturday crowd was nearly double the size with 76 entries in total. In the aftermath, a combined total of 42 players moved on to the final day.

For each of those qualifiers, they were getting primo value for their money with the prize pool now at VND 616,000,000 (US$27,000 approx.), over three times the advertised guarantee.

Leading the contenders into the final day was Phuong Nguyen followed by Bùi Đắc Luân. By the time the final table of 8 was reached, the leader was not in the lineup while Luân continued to hold strong until he eventually exited in 5th place.

At three-handed, Trần Ngọc Dũng dominated the count with his large stack and brought it into the heads up round facing Nguyễn Duy Anh. After a long battle to the finish, with both players valiantly defending their stacks to the last chip, Nguyễn Duy Anh defeated Trần Ngọc Dũng  and became the first Pro Poker Cup champion.

With the event now concluded, the organizers expressed to Somuchpoker that the success and turnout of this event has prompted them to consider organizing future poker festivals on a monthly basis with this formula. If that were so, then we may be seeing the start of a very promising poker scene in Vietnam.
