The Japan Open was created in 2011 and changed its name to Japan Poker Tour (JPT) in 2014.

As playing poker with cash is illegal in Japan, the Japan Open Poker Tour has distinct rules. The final prizes are packages to Asian Poker Events that include buy-ins, hotel accommodation and transportation expenses.

Since the Japan Open Poker Tour organization is sponsored by PokerStars, those events include the Asia Championship of Poker, which is held in Macau City of Dreams (ACOP), the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT), and the Macau Poker Cup (MPC).

The 2014 Season 1 Osaka Tour and Tokyo Tour had a total of 18,000 players participating in games of Texas Holdem no-limit.
