Steve O’ Dwyer – 13 and counting

Steve O’Dwyer has been remarkable in his consistency when it comes to tournaments in the last year or more, with most of his results coming in High Rollers against the toughest opposition in the world. This week marks the 13th consecutive week that he has occupied the GPI number 1 spot, surpassing the 11 week reigns of Jason Mercier and Marvin Rettenmaier. He still has some way to go if he aims to topple the record of Ole Schemion, who held top spot for 18 weeks between December 2014 and April 2015. Jason Mercier and Dan Smith have had 17 week stints at the top before, and Byron Kaverman enjoyed 15 weeks in pole position before O’Dwyer took over.

WSOP makes changes to Player of the Year

With the 2016 WSOP having started on May 31st, changes to the scoring system for the WSOP Player of the Year race are now being implemented. These changes extend to the GPI Player of the Year title too, and feature a few key alterations. Field size, buy in, and finishing place are the three components of the scoring system. The first change is with regards to tournaments with a buy in lower than USD$1,500. They used to have no contribution to a player’s score, but now, all events will qualify. There has also been a lower limit cap introduced on whether a tournament qualifies to earn a player points. Tournaments must now have at least 32 runners in order to qualify. These changes are now in operation for GPI Player of the Year, WSOP Player of the Year, and will become part of the GPI world rankings on January 1st 2017.
