The poker scene in the UK has always been quite relaxed and liberal, with little in the way of legal restrictions to hold players back. This has allowed both the online, and live poker scenes to grow and flourish over the years.
Some European countries such as Italy and Spain have found their players segregated on major poker rooms like PokerStars, but the UK’s relaxed laws mean that players have enjoyed shared online liquidity with much of the world since online poker began.
There are few countries more friendly towards online poker, and this fact has led to some gambling companies based in the UK setting up successful online poker operations. Some online poker rooms have moved their bases to regions which fall under the category of UK overseas territories or crown dependencies, such as Gibraltar and the Isle of Man.
Online stars
Among the biggest stars of online poker in the UK is Chris Moorman. The pro from Essex spent several years at the top of the leaderboard when it comes online tournament cashes, and currently has over $16 million to his name.
Ben “milkybarkid” Grundy is a little-known Omaha cash game specialist from the UK who has one f the most impressive graphs ever seen. Grundy has amassed over $8 million across just over 320,000 hands at the Omaha cash tables.
Jake “jakecody” Cody is better known for his live results these days, having collected EPT, WPT and WSOP titles. Despite that, he has also seen his fair share of success online, winning a SCOOP high title for just under $250,000 back in 2011.
United Kingdom Poker Sites FAQs
Are there any laws online players need to be aware of when playing in the UK?
Although the UK is liberal with online poker laws, you must be 18 to play. In terms of tax however, you don’t need to pay a single penny on anything you win online, even if you consider poker to be your income. Overseas poker sites were expected to pay taxes to the UK voluntarily until the 2014 Gambling Bill, which made company taxes of this nature mandatory in return for renewed licenses. None of this has had any knock-on effect for players however, or liquidity.
Which online poker rooms are most popular with players in the UK?
PokerStars is top of the list as you might expect, with a 7-day average of 5,800. Perhaps surprisingly, GGPoker is next on the list with 1,350. Next is partypoker with 1,300, followed by 888Poker, which has a current 7-day average of 950 at the time of writing.
Will the UK’s online poker laws change if the UK exits the EU?
This is highly unlikely. Assuming the UK leaves the European Union on October 31st, 2019, laws relating to online poker and gambling will remain unchanged. Partly, this is because all laws relating to online poker and gambling were made by the UK itself, starting with the Betting and Gaming Act of 1960. The online poker scene in the UK is not guided by any EU laws, and in any case, EU laws will be temporarily adopted in full in the event of the UK leaving the EU anyway. It should also be noted that gambling laws may be different in the Republic of Ireland compared the UK, as it is a separate country.
